Controversial Materials Policy
The Library has a responsibility to serve the entire community, the minority as well as majority. The Library has made a great effort in providing a balanced collection and attempts to represent all sides of controversial issues. In no case does the Library take an official stand on any public question. The function of the Library is to provide information, not to advocate specific points of view.
The West Liberty Public Library welcomes comments and criticisms of its collections. However, no citizen has the right to neither prevent another from reading/viewing a specific material nor demand its removal from the library's shelves. An official complaint may be filed using the following procedure.
- The person directly involved must file a complaint, not a second interested party. (If the interested party opposes the material that must be a second complaint.)
- A Concern About Resources form must be filled out and filed with the Library Director.
- A meeting will be held with the concerned party and Library Director. This meeting will inform concerned party about Library policy on selection and controversial material. Concerned Party may withdraw complaint at this time, if concerned party still opposes material step four is taken.
- A meeting with the West Liberty Public Library Board is held with concerned party. The Library Board Decision is final.
